The next domino has fallen in Karmelo Anthony’s murder case. The 18-year-old was indicted for stabbing and killing Austin Metcalf, who was 17 years old at the time, at a Frisco ISD track meet back in April.
Anthony attended the Collin County Courthouse on Tuesday (June 24) and was indicted by a grand jury. He is facing a first-degree murder charge and, if convicted, can be handed anywhere between five and 99 years in prison or a life sentence. The teenager, who was also 17 when he allegedly murdered Metcalf, was arrested on April 2. His bond was eventually reduced, and he was released on April 14, serving a house arrest sentence since then.
“We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement. “But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves.”
Frisco ISD released surveillance footage of the deadly altercation earlier this month. The video shows sudden movement in a tent, and eventually, viewers can make out two figures interacting with one another. Frisco ISD employees stated that this particular moment was when the stabbing took place.
Anthony, upon being taken into custody, admitted to what he had done. An officer arrested him and said, “I have the alleged suspect [in custody].” Anthony replied, “I’m not alleged, I did it.” The police report claims that he said that Metcalf put his hands on him despite him asking the teenager not to, and later inquired as to whether Metcalf would be okay and if the stabbing could be considered self-defense.
