Meet 1LOVE, a songwriter, producer and engineer hailing from Knysna who makes immersive sonic environments using the most unorthodox of sounds and recordings.
His latest creation, titled The Grand Pendulum, is like a mystery begging to be discovered, a mystery of voice, instrumentation, electronica and more. Real name Kyle Underwood, he defines the 9-track record in an attempt to channel his journey into the unknown.
In between studies and performances as a solo jazz pianist in Cape Town, 1LOVE became completly absorbed by manic creative episodes pent up in the studio, making music out of sonic distortions.
Opener “XKX” represents the start of that journey, back in 2022, and the near year-long song writing process that followed. Journeying into the unknown of experimentation, 1LOVE brings us a voyage across the outer-most reaches of a visceral, psychedelic soundscape.

It’s almost difficult for me to single out one track, because they all seamlessly blend into one kind of gigantic sonic expedition, and everything about it tries to break the rules.
From quiet moments of sensitive ambience to processions of grandiose synthesizers and inter-continental instrumentation, The Grand Pendulum truly is a back and forth, a swaying from big to small, bold to vulnerable, and all the wonder in between. That’s about as much as I think I can say about the music. It’s not made for words. Listen for yourself and you’ll understand exactly what I mean.
