Selena Gomez is opening up about her childhood crushes, and one name in particular came up as a surprise.
During a recent episode of Complex‘s GOAT Talk with Karol G, the singer and actress revealed that her very first celebrity crush was none other than West Coast Hip-Hop icon, Ice Cube.
When asked to name her GOAT rapper, Selena named Eminem but then added, “Can I tell you my first one I had a crush on? Ice Cube.” Further explaining why, she said, “I had the biggest crush on him when I was, like, five. It’s so weird, but I just thought he would protect me. I’m only saying it simply based on my childhood.”
While Gomez didn’t specify whether Cube’s music or his acting roles are what drew her in, she made it clear that at a young age there was something about his presence that she liked. Watched below at the 12-minute mark.
The 32-year-old also reflected on her early love for Eminem, crediting her father — who worked as a DJ — with introducing her to the rapper’s music. “One of mine was Eminem only because I grew up listening to him. My dad was a DJ and he would remix all kinds of songs, and every time it was an Eminem song, I would just get so excited,” she explained.
Karol G joined in the conversation, listing Eminem as her childhood GOAT as well and naming Nicki Minaj as her pick for the new generation.
