Tamika Powell, 36, was fatally shot in the back of her head following an argument with man at a barbecue in Brooklyn on Wednesday (June 25).
According to local authorities, Powell was found lying unconscious on the street near Carlton and Pacific Avenues in Prospect Heights at around 10:20 p.m.. She had a single gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene, NYPD reported.
Witnesses told PIX11 News that Powell was at the event and left after she got into an argument with a man.
Powell’s mother, Norma Campbell, told the New York Post that Powell was at the barbecue for about 15 minutes before the argument. “After the argument, Tamika left and the guy went into his apartment…came back out with a mask. He put on the mask and left in the direction Tamika left. There was a moment of quiet… and that’s when they heard the one shot. People ran to the other direction of the sound to see what was going on and saw Tamika in the middle of the street,” she explained.

The suspect followed her for roughly a block, continuing the verbal altercation. When she turned away from him, she was shot in the back of the head. Fellow guests at the barbecue confirmed hearing the gunfire.
Though the incident took place near the Barclays Center during the NBA draft, investigators believe there’s no connection between the two events.
Campbell spoke to PIX11 about her late daughter. “She did whatever she wanted to do with no apologies, no regrets, but she had a big heart, a big loving heart,” Campbell shared.
She also addressed the suspect, who has not yet been apprehended. “You are a coward. You were bold enough to take a life. Then come forward, no matter what the confrontation is, it didn’t need to get to this level,” said Campbell.
Powell is survived by her two daughters: a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old.
