Nigerian Afrobeat musician and activist Seun Kuti has stirred fresh controversy following his scathing remarks about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
In a video released on Sunday, July 7, 2025, Kuti alleged that the President’s only notable achievement since assuming office is the concealment of high-level crimes.
The singer, who is known for his fierce political commentary and social advocacy, took aim at what he described as a deliberate use of harsh economic policies to mask entrenched corruption and protect Nigeria’s political elite.
He claimed that Nigerians are being subjected to extreme hardship as a result of policies that serve no other purpose than to defend corrupt practices.
In the video, Kuti argued that the subsidy removal, naira floatation, and related reforms were framed as brave decisions by the government but were, in reality, mechanisms to insulate criminal activity.
He said these policies have worsened the lives of everyday Nigerians, not improved them, and that the burden of economic reforms is borne solely by the masses while those in power continue to benefit.
He also referenced recent statements by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who publicly praised President Tinubu for protecting Nigerians.
Kuti rejected this praise, interpreting it instead as an admission that the administration is shielding corrupt individuals, particularly members of the political class. He accused the President of enabling elite impunity and failing to hold powerful figures accountable.
The singer did not stop there. He recalled long-standing allegations of financial misconduct involving prominent figures from the past administration, particularly claims that a former governor’s wife received N4 billion monthly.
According to Kuti, such claims have been ignored by the current government, reinforcing his position that the system is designed to protect the powerful at the expense of the people.
