TSA Ends Shoe-Off Travel Policy For General Security Passengers

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has ended a nearly 20-year-old policy, shifting airport travel for passengers who use the general security line. The federal agency has ended the practice of having travelers remove their shoes before entering the terminal. Previously, only passengers with TSA Precheck were able to travel without taking off their footwear.

According to ABC News, an unexpected memo was shared with TSA agents across the United States last week, with many airports beginning the change on Sunday (July 6). The outlet noted that the goal is to implement the change across all airports in a short amount of time.

With the new process, those who prompt a response from the security scanners will be required to undergo additional screening and to remove their shoes.

The TSA has not made an official announcement regarding the shift, according to The New York Times.

“T.S.A. and D.H.S. are always exploring new and innovative ways to enhance the passenger experience and our strong security posture,” a T.S.A. spokesman shared with the outlet. “Any potential updates to our security process will be issued through official channels.”

TSA launched the shoe-off policy in 2006, based on intelligence pointing to a continuing threat, according to the official website. An additional policy that took effect in 2006 included the banning of all liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on luggage, updated with the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule that same year.

The updated shoe policy comes as American travelers are also officially required to have a REAL ID as of May 7, 2025. Passengers who do not have REAL ID-compliant identification, and who do not have another acceptable alternative such as a passport, can expect to face delays, additional screening, and the possibility of not being permitted into the security checkpoint, according to the TSA.

“Secretary Noem and the Trump administration are enforcing the 2005 REAL ID Act and regulations on May 7, as directed by Congress and the American people,” detailed Adam Stahl, TSA Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator, in a statement.

“The Real ID requirement bolsters safety by making fraudulent IDs harder to forge, thwarting criminals and terrorists. TSA will implement REAL ID effectively and efficiently, continuing to ensure the safety and security of passengers while also working to minimize operational disruptions at airports.”
