In a reflective statement during an interview on L-Tido Podcast, Sizwe Dhlomo expressed his observation that the genre’s influence and financial impact have waned compared to its peak years.

“I don’t keep up with the game as much as I used to, so there are a lot of things that I’m missing, but obviously I see the people that are making waves. But my sentiment is that the game is obviously not as strong as it used to be,” he remarked.

Dhlomo also noted a shift in the financial landscape for artists, suggesting that the hip-hop industry may not be as lucrative as it once was. “Dare I even say, it doesn’t look to me like dudes are making as much guap as they used to make,” he said, hinting at a broader decline in commercial opportunities.

The famed radio DJ attributed the shift to a variety of factors, including the natural ebb and flow of musical trends. “There’s a myriad of reasons that contribute to that. One of the things could just be that the window of opportunity is closed. Sometimes things happen at a certain time when you have to strike while the iron is hot,” he explained.

He drew comparisons between hip-hop’s former dominance and the current amapiano wave. “There was a time when people felt about hip-hop the way people currently feel about amapiano. So if you went to a party, the party would be all hip-hop,” Sizwe Dhlomo reminisced, underscoring the cyclical nature of music’s popularity.
