Michael Vick has a new position, bringing him back to the football field.

The 44-year-old has confirmed that he has signed on to be the next head coach of the Norfolk State University football team. Vick shared the news Tuesday (Dec. 17) on Facebook writing, “It’s an honor to announce that I’ll be the new head coach of Norfolk State University… looking forward to coming back home.”

The announcement comes after rumors that the former NFL player would lead at Sacramento State as Bleacher Report noted the institution’s president, Luke Wood, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter he had met with Vick to discuss the role.

On Monday, the former Virginia Tech quarterback shared with The VirginianPilot that he had interviewed for the role at NSU and expected to make a decision “soon,” after speaking with with university President Javaune Adams-Gaston and Spartans athletic director Dr. Melody Webb.

“I know how to lead and I know what it takes,” he detailed to the outlet when speaking about his lack of formal coaching experience. Vick also sees the opportunity as a chance to give back to the Hampton Roads community.

According to a report from The Virginian-Pilot confirming the hiring decision, the No. 1 draft pick has already reached out to potential assistant coaches and support staff. Former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Dwight Vick and Apprentice School associate head coach and offensive coordinator Elton Brown have already sparked rumors of potential involvement.

In the head coach role, the Virginia native would be replacing Dawson Odums, who was let go from NSU in November in a change in leadership for the football program.

According to the athletics website, NSU football finished the 2024 football season with a 4-8 record, 2-3 in the MEAC, ending the year with one more victory than the 2023 season.
