Mariah Carey and Outkast are this (encloses index finger and thumb) much closer to being immortalized in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The coveted shrine released the list of nominees for 2025’s commemoration, stacked with icons who have been nominated in previous years and first-timers alike.
Legends up for the chance to be inducted into the Hall of Fame include first-time nominees Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, Maná, Outkast, and Phish. Meanwhile, noms like Soundgarden, Oasis, Mariah Carey, Cyndi Lauper, White Stripes, and Joy Division/New Order are receiving their third and second nods, respectively.
If you’re wondering how the committee landed on these particular artists, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame explained that the musician’s first single had to have been released in 2000 or earlier. And, when possible, most acts that end up inducted into the coveted institution perform at the live show, with the annual event occurring in Los Angeles this fall. Inductees are set to be revealed in April with a string of awards to be announced around the same time.

John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, spoke to 2025 nominees for this year’s musical enshrinement. Sykes showed love to every musician in a public statement, saying, “These remarkable nominees have each created their own musical style and attitude impacting generations of music lovers and contributing to the ever-evolving sounds and continued growth of rock & roll.”
While the nomination stage is exciting, artists who have been up for the Hall of Fame know how gutting it can be when you don’t receive enough votes to be inducted into the shrine.
“My thoughts are, I didn’t get in,” Carey relayed to the Los Angeles Times last year. “Everybody was calling me, going, ‘I think you’re getting in!’ and so I was excited about it. But then it didn’t happen. My lawyer [Allen Grubman] got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before me.”
