Kyren Lacy, formerly a star wide receiver for the LSU Tigers, passed away this weekend. The late 24-year-old’s death was ruled a suicide via gunshot wounds.

News of his death first broke on Sunday morning (April 13). TMZ later reported, via local Texas authorities, that it all began with a “weapons disturbance call” made on Saturday evening (April 12). Lacy reportedly got into an argument with a family member and fired a gun into the ground due to his frustration. He fled the scene, and law enforcement pursued him.

As they tried to initiate a traffic stop, he continued to try and evade the police before his vehicle crashed. The police approached the vehicle and realized that he was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Units conducted an investigation of the incident,” a local news source said. “Preliminary information indicates Lacy shot himself during the pursuit and prior to the vehicle crashing. A handgun was recovered from the interior of the vehicle.”

Kyren Lacy’s conduct and eventual death were especially notable as it came just one day before he would stand before a grand jury; he committed a hit-and-run in December 2024 that caused a man to die. Lacy was reportedly speeding on a highway in Chackbay, La., and crossed a centerline into a “no-passing” zone. Two cars that were headed in the opposite direction attempted to swerve out of the way, and one of them crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing 78-year-old man Herman Hall in the process.

The star wide receiver reportedly fled the scene of the crime but was later caught by police. He spent about two hours in Lafourche Parish jail before posting $151,000 bail. He was facing charges for negligent homicide, hit-and-run, and reckless operation, all while preparing to enter the 2025 NFL Draft.

VIBE sends its sincerest condolences to Lacy and Hall’s family, friends, and loved ones.
