Spike Lee Responds To Knicks Fan Telling Him To Stop Attending Games

There’s an urban myth that has been circulating among New York City sports fans for years that diehard New York Knicks supporter Spike Lee is bad luck for the team, particularly when he’s in attendance courtside at Madison Square Garden.

Just ahead of the team’s Game 4 win against the Boston Celtics Monday (May 12), a Knicks fan decided to address the man himself, taking to the director‘s Instagram account and asking the film legend not to attend future games for the sake of the Knicks winning the series.

“Please stay out of MSG for the game. Don’t show up. We want to win,” wrote one of Lee’s followers on a post promoting his “Orange And Blue Skies” Knicks merch, available here.

The request did not sit well with the Brooklyn native, who first replied, “KISS MY [orange and blue dot emojis] SKIES A**. F U.”

In a follow-up comment, he added, “KISS MY BLACK A** 2 TIMES” before ending with a good ol’ fashion “F**K U,” like any New Yorker would. Check out the comment thread below.

The idea that Lee is “bad luck” for the Knicks was most recently perpetuated by Harlem rapper Cam’ron, who took to social media in December 2024 asking Lee to stop attending games at MSG in a bit where he pretended to be held hostage.

“Dear Spike Lee, please do not come back to Madison Square Garden, as you’re bad luck to the New York Knicks,” the 49-year-old said in an Instagram video on Dec. 21. “We haven’t won sh*t since you been a ticket holder and all you do is kiss other players’ a** — pause — from other teams when they come.”

The It Is What It Is co-host continued, “We felt it was disrespectful when you was through another man’s legs — pause — taking pictures of Steph Curry. Please don’t come back… And your movies suck — pause — except for Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X. We out.” See the clip yourself below.

The Knicks are currently beating the Boston Celtics 3-1 in the eastern conference semi-finals. Game 5 takes place in Boston Wednesday (May 14) and, if necessary, Game 6 will follow Friday (May 16) in New York City.
