One of the most effective promotional methods in this era involves the triggering of people’s nostalgia for a specific show or movie while simultaneously adding new chapters to the story. On that front, Amazon Prime Video may have struck IP gold with their forthcoming Barbershop series starring Jermaine Fowler.

The 37-year-old actor, who previously starred in Ricky Stanicky, will take on the role of Travis “Trav” Porter. Porter is the grandson of a barber who worked at Calvin’s barbershop in Chicago, the centerpiece of the Barbershop movie trilogy. While “the barbers are new, the shop remains just as lively, the customers just as argumentative and the fades are still the dopest in the city — because at Calvin’s, the community comes together for way more than just a haircut,” the show’s summary reads.

Marshall Todd, who wrote the original Barbershop screenplay, will be writing and executive producing the series. Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat company will also co-produce the series, along with Prominent Productions, State Street Pictures, and Amazon MGM Studios. Hart played James Ricky in three episodes of the Showtime television adaptation of the film trilogy, so there will be multiple elements of the original work involved in this forthcoming series.

“We are thrilled to announce a new series based on the hilarious and innovative world of Barbershop for our global Prime Video customers,” Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said in a statement.

“The television adaptation of this iconic film franchise is in excellent hands with co-showrunners Max Searle and Marshall Todd. We couldn’t be happier with their collaboration and hard work to bring Calvin’s Chicago-based barbershop to life for a new audience on Prime Video.”

Barbershop was first released in 2002, starring Ice Cube, Cedric The Entertainer, Eve, Anthony Anderson, and more. They followed up with Barbershop: Back In Business in 2004 before a long hiatus that ended in 2016 with Barbershop: The Next Cut.
