Recording a cover album is a bold, brave move. The purists will have your guts for garters if you ruin their favorite song. It’s a big reason why most artists won’t play in the covers space. Evert Snyman’s new album All Killer Filler serves as middle finger to the cover-police. The songs are excellently nuanced and carefully chosen to suit his sound.
The album kicks off with a rendition of “Search and Destroy” by the Stooges, and this high voltage rock ’n roll interpretation sets the tone for a seriously good offering, while “Temporary Secretary” is a fresh take on Paul McCartney’s lesser-known track, proving that Snyman is not just playing the songs from tabs and hoping for the best.
Evert has found the perfect balance between making the songs his own and staying true to the sentiment of the original. This is delivered in the small nuances he brings instrumentally to many of the tracks. Further stand-outs include his version of “Zero” by Smashing Pumpkins – classy and true, yet keeping his own flavour strong. “I Will” is an almost flawless version of the Beatles classic, and “The Color and the Shape” by Foo Fighters? Pure rock and roll bliss.
The album closer is Tom Wait’s “Jesus Gonna Be Here”, which Snyman has crafted into a haunting classic in its own right. All Killer Filler brings a wealth of innovative consideration to the table and it’s a great effort on Snyman’s part.
