Allen Iverson became emotional while speaking about his bond with Shaquille O’Neal in a recent interview with People. Unable to hold back tears, he spoke on how much of a “mentor” and “big brother” the NBA Hall of Famer has been to him.
“I love him so much,” he said. “I don’t want to be up here crying and sh*t, you know what I mean? I just love him. He’s a big brother, a mentor and just everything you’re supposed to be as a man.” He added, “I love his family. I love how he raised his kids. I learned from him… he’s just a beautiful guy. I can’t talk about him.”
Iverson’s emotional spill came as he discussed his participation in Netflix’s new docuseries Power Moves, which follows O’Neal and Iverson, as they set out to rebrand Reebok Basketball by signing stars like Angel Reese.
Since being appointed Vice President of Reebok Basketball last October — alongside O’Neal, who now serves as President — Iverson spoke on his mission to give back to the brand that put him on the map. “I know what Reebok did for me,” he said. “I know what Reebok did for my family. I know what Reebok did for the culture. I know how Reebok blessed me and gave me a chance. And for me to give back is only right.”
It was Reebok that debuted Iverson’s iconic Question sneaker back in 1996, and according to him, Reese is the “answer” to reviving the brand. “I love everything about her,” he said. “I love what she stands for. She reminds me of my little sister. She’s dope to me. She reminds me of myself — hoop-wise and on a personal level, too.”
Speaking of the women he adores, he also opened up about his current leading lady. “My girl gave me a second chance when I did wrong,” he shared. “I’ve been this happy, but the fact of being given a second chance? I’m just a blessed guy.”
Power Moves is now streaming on Netflix.
