Benzino is embracing his upcoming role as a grandfather, despite a tumultuous relationship with his daughter, Coi Leray.
During a recent interview with RealLyfe Productions, the former rapper and media voice shared his thoughts after learning that Coi is expecting her first child with rapper Trippie Redd. “I’m going to be a granddad. Ain’t that something?” he said with a mix of surprise and excitement. “I don’t know when this is going to air… I think I found out when the world found out. It feels kind of surreal.”
Adding that Coi won’t be the only one giving him a grand child, he also shared, “My son just told me that his girl is pregnant. He’s my oldest, him and Coi are separated by three years. I mean, I’ll be 60 in July, so it took me all this time to be a granddad, man. It’s just surreal, I can’t believe it.”
The “No More Parties” rapper is expecting with Trippie Redd, whom Benzino has yet to meet. “I don’t know enough about [Trippie], you know?” the 59-year-old admitted. “I’ve never met him personally. I’ve heard a few of his songs. I don’t try to judge based off the Internet, ’cause Lord knows I hate when they do it to me.”
Sending his well wishes to the parents-to-be, Benzino said, “First, I want to congratulate both of them. My daughter’s having a baby by Trippie Redd. Like, wow, huh? I mean, I’ma be a hell of a grandfather, you know what I’m saying?”
Benzino also reflected on how becoming a grandparent could bring a new perspective for both of his children. “Being a granddad, what it’s going to do is show both of my kids what it is to be a parent now working in the industry. So this is going to be interesting. It’s the most beautiful thing that I guess could ever happen to them. I’m hoping for marriage down the line for that mutual support for the child’s sake.”
Although the life milestone is an exciting time for all parties involved, the “Rock The Party” MC admitted that his relationship with Coi remains distant. He shared that he doesn’t often speak to her and even declined to offer her a message during the interview—preferring to have that conversation “in private.”
Coi Leray’s pregnancy may possibly be the life-changing moment that could reconcile her relationship with her father, but for now, the soon-to-be granddad is excited to meet his grandchildren.
