There have been several narratives about why Cardi B took more than seven years to release her sophomore album. One certainty is that sales won’t be an issue when it comes to Am I The Drama? as the LP is already eligible for an RIAA Platinum certification.
Chart Data, a popular music page on X, revealed that the album has sold over 1.5 million total album units before its official release on Sept. 19. How? Well, that is because her 2020 hit “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion and 2021 hit “Up” are both part of the 23-song album.
Both records debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100; “WAP” was certified 8x Platinum as of September 2023, and “Up” was certified 2x platinum as of July 2021. The cumulative success of these tracks gets added to the overall album thanks to the adjusted rules in the streaming era, thus she can already call Am I The Drama? a commercial win even if it does not land well upon its official release.
Cardi B is no stranger to commercial or critical success. Her debut album Invasion Of Privacy won Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys and is on the road to a Diamond certification, as every song on the tracklist is certified Platinum at minimum.
“I Like It” featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, and “Bodak Yellow are both certified Diamond. Her 2021 hit “Up” helped her become the female rapper with the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 as well, with five total.
Cardi could potentially land another No. 1 in her latest single “Outside,” a fierce reclamation of her independence and desire to engage with athlete crushes after her divorce from Offset. The road to September ought to be an interesting one. Check out “Outside” below.
