Out of all the guests to ever stop by The Breakfast Club, only one has had Charlamagne Tha God “shook.” That person was Nelly.
When the rapper and wife Ashanti recently appeared on the show, DJ Envy and Charlamagne recalled a somewhat heated exchange from over a decade ago.
“I knew he was gonna f**k [you] up,” Envy quipped. When remembering the words that left him speechless, Charlamagne confessed, “Nelly said something so calm. He said, ‘I keep retainers for people like you.’”
“Swear to God,” Nelly said at the time.
In the initial exchange, Charlamagne was antagonizing Nelly about his music. Angela Yee chimed in, “I know when you were younger, everybody always said that you were kinda hot-tempered, so Charlamagne coulda really just did something, but I’m sure you’ve calmed down.”
Nelly replied, “We learned to pull back to a certain point.” He then delivered the chilling rebuttal: “Retainers are retainers, so we make sure we keep ’em.”
After Charlamagne hinted at suing if things got physical, Nelly calmly stated, “Say what you mean and mean what you say.”
The controversial commentator spoke in lengthy detail about the interaction on Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj back in 2019. Though Birdman’s run-in was a close contender, Charlamagne confessed that Nelly’s was “most intense” because “I was like, ‘Aight, this dude might knock my head off.’”
He explained, “You gotta think, Nelly is an athletic brother. He’s in shape, and he was very calm. And he just looked at me and he said to me, ‘You know I keep retainers for guys like you, cuz.’ I understand that talk.”
While Charlamagne didn’t apologize, he did “shut the hell up,” adding, “You just gotta know when to shut the f**k up.”
Fast-forward to present day, Nelly admitted that the host-author “had [him] hot,” but now has his wife to keep him cool and collected.
