Chris Brown took to his Instagram Stories this week to let it be known he’s fed up with being linked to other artists and dismissed by an industry he feels hasn’t fully embraced him. The 35-year-old performer pushed back against the frequent online conversations about him and other singers, making it clear he’s not interested in the comparisons.
“Until one of these artists do all this sh*t by themselves with no help and the media constantly f**king with them, then come holla at me,” he wrote. “I’m trying to feed my family! I could give a f**k about the next artist and what they doing!”
He also addressed the perception that he’s not accepted by his peers, adding, “I don’t f**k with celebrities at all and I’m not welcome in their circles.” He added that his focus remains on his loyal fanbase, declaring, “Breezy Bowl is for the dedicated fans who actually wanna be there. F**k everything else!”
He then acknowledged what many of his supporters have long felt — that no matter how hard he works, the public conversation surrounding him tends to center on his controversial past, rather than his contributions to music. “I been overly busting my a** for the last 20 years and I understand I will never be recognized for nothing more than drama,” he admitted. “So miss me with all dat sh*t please.”
The global icon — who is currently on his European leg of his anniversary Breezy Bowl XX tour — has been championed as the “greatest entertainer of his generation” as well as constantly compared to the likes of Michael Jackson — something he has shied away from.
Just last month, 50 Cent took to his Instagram page praising the singer’s talents. “CB out he made bond, I’m only saying sh*t about him because I think he is the best overall artist out,” the Queens rapper declared. “I watched his whole run!”
A month prior to that, R&B legend Bobby Brown, echoed the same sentiments during an appearance on Club Shay Shay with Shannon Sharpe. When asked which artist has come the closest to emulating the late Michael Jackson, he responded, “I gotta go with Chris on being as close to Michael as anybody could ever get. Chris Brown is the closest thing to Michael Jackson. He’s still young, still has something to prove, but he’s on his way.”
Back in June 2022, Breezy responded to the MJ comparisons while visiting Big Boy’s podcast. “People wanna compare me, but it’s the generational gap. So I’m happy they can say that,” he said. “It could be a lot worse. I remember there use to be a whole different conversation about Chris Brown. I’m thankful in the regards.”
During the peak of Verzuz, many threw CB’s name in the mix, debating who could stand toe-to-toe with the “Sensational” crooner. Of course, the only opponent that made sense to most was none other than the “King of R&B,” Usher.
However, speaking to Billboard in 2022, the 35-year-old explained why he hadn’t participated in the popular music battle like many of her industry peers. “Me at my career now, I ain’t hanging no towel up. I don’t feel that I wanna go up against somebody that might not be in there,” he shared. “It’s too much of a Verzuz for me. I don’t want to have to overshadow nobody or really, ‘Damn, that boy killed this person.’ I don’t even want to go back and forth with none of that.”
