The SA metal scene is waking from a rather long slumber. For a few years, the scene has been licking its wounds, after being beaten back by a drowning tide of post-pandemic produced pop. What that’s meant, is bands have had time to sit and just write. Which is exactly what Consellatia have done. And boy has it paid off.
Magisterial Romance is a breath of fresh experimentation for SA metal. The collective minds of Keenan Oakes and Gideon Lamprecht have crafted a ballsy, hauntingly beautiful and formidable album. And it features Alison Rachel and Skye MacInnes from HONEYMOAN to boot.
Less relentless in its black metal roots, songs like “Adorn” focus on the clash of brutal male vocals with that of an evocative female serenade. The combination of clean guitar and blast beat drums on “Paean Emerging” just work. A point worth mentioning is the production is a bit unbalanced in places, but considering this is Constellatia’s first offering, one can turn a blind eye to that for now.
Draw yourself a midnight bath, light a candle and let Magisterial Romance amerce you in its raw, melancholic essence.
