Court orders global removal of Adele’s song over copyright issues

A Brazilian court has issued an order for the removal of Adele’s 2015 hit song ‘Million Years Ago’ from all global streaming platforms and radio, following a copyright dispute.

The ruling came after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused the British singer of copying elements from his 1996 song ‘Mulheres’, performed by renowned Brazilian artist Martinho da Vila.

Geraes claims that the melody and structure of Adele’s song closely resemble his track from the 1995 album ‘Mulheres’.

In his lawsuit, Geraes is demanding $160,000 in moral damages, along with a songwriting credit for ‘Million Years Ago’.

The composer asserts that his work was used without permission, and he has sought compensation for the alleged infringement.

Judge Victor Torres, who oversaw the case, ordered the immediate removal of the song from all digital platforms and radio stations worldwide.

Additionally, the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal Music, which represent Adele, face the threat of fines amounting to $8,000 per instance of non-compliance with the court’s decision.

As of the time of reporting, Adele’s team has not issued an official statement regarding the lawsuit or the court’s decision.
