Meet Crunchy Sweater (real name Chenoa Nwokedi) whose unique blend of shoegaze and dub makes for a languid, delightfully sultry listen. His latest EP, SEEPING, comes as an extended confessional of the smudged line between lust and love, propelled with an ambient groove.
Where does the moniker come from, you may ask? Well, he’s looking to navigate the crunchier sides of life through his hazy, dazy sonic parameters, giving himself full creative permission to get searingly honest. Love and desire take to the fore here, as the waxes poetic on spiralling down a wormhole of infatuation.
Opener “Feel Low” kicks things off on a suggestive note, marrying heady bass rhythm and ambient guitar for a sultry commentary on just what he’d like to do to her. The title track favours a boom-ka beat and floaty electronic strains, while “Looking Good” is a confession of adoration, wrapped in pillowy, chiming, synth dub.
At times the EP feels vaguely drug-induced, floating in a sort of suspended euphoria of early love. “Baby I’m all yours,” he croons through “Looking Good”, before the Milky Chance-esque percussive flow of “Cookup” picks up the pace. “Um” wraps things up with languid adoration and a promise of wholesome experiences and Crunchy Sweater just leaves you wanting more.
