With X-Men anticipated to make its debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Cynthia Erivo is eyeing the role of Storm (last played by Halle Berry).
The almost-EGOT star made the revelation while speaking to the National Board of Review, who praised her recent portrayal of Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) in Wicked. When asked which role she would love to take on next, without hesitation, she named Ororo Munroe a.k.a Storm—emphasizing her admiration for the character’s complexity.
“I really want to play Storm,” she shared. “I know it sounds frivolous, but I don’t think we’ve uncovered how grand she is and all of the inner turmoil that she has. So I think there’s a world in which we could do something like that.”
Erivo’s bid for the role comes as the MCU is gearing up to introduce the X-Men since Disney’s acquiring of Marvel Entertainment in 2009. While characters like Black Panther, Captain America and She-Hulk already making appearances in the MCU, the X-Men have yet to do so.
According to MovieWeb, Storm, created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975. The powerful mutant can control the weather—making her such an iconic player in the Marvel realm. As a longstanding member of the X-Men, she uses her abilities to fly, summon lightning, and lead younger mutants.
The striking look of white hair and glowing white eyes has previously been portrayed by Halle Berry, Alexandra Shipp, Jill Scott (voice), Danielle Nicolet, and more.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently hinted at the X-Men’s MCU debut during the Disney APAC Content Showcase in November 2024. He revealed that the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars will serve as a turning point for introducing more mutants into the MCU.
“I think you will see that continues in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize,” Feige said. “Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. Again, one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”
As Marvel has yet to introduce anyone to play Storm, Cynthia Erivo just may be a strong contender for such an iconic character. For now, fans will have to just wait it out and see if Marvel answers Erivo’s desire to become the weather-controlling mutant.
