DDG shocked fans and social media when he took a pair of clippers to his signature locs while live-streaming the moment on Twitch. The bold transformation came as a promise fulfilled during his weeklong “Hit-A-Thon” livestream: a 24/7 event where he created an entire album from scratch while engaging with fans in real-time.
The rapper and YouTuber vowed to cut his hair if he surpassed 40,000 Twitch subscribers, a goal he not only met, but exceeded, finishing with over 42,000 new subs and peaking at an audience of more than 90,000 viewers. “Cutting my dreads right now on Twitch,” he announced to his viewers. “It’s 60,000 people watching on Twitch.”
Before taking the plunge, he invited his family and friends to share in the moment. “Y’all wanna cut one?” he asked, handing over the scissors. But as the first loc was snipped, reality hit. “Noooo,” he shouted, watching as his friend held up the detached strand for the camera.
Once the final loc fell, DDG embraced his fresh fade — though he made it known the change wouldn’t be permanent. “I’mma go right back to where I started,” he assured fans. “I’mma be a sky top again. I got to grow everything out.”
One viewer commented, “This is actually very spiritual I don’t even think any of them realize it yet. I thought it was going to be a bad idea for him but I love this for him so much. I know he feels lighter already.” Another person remarked, “Handsome with or without. Always been that guy, new era unlocked,” as a third said, “Look mature and better…. Good for you young man.”
A fourth viewer called out his break up with Halle Bailey, joking, “Halle finna double back.”
Throughout the “Hit-A-Thon,” viewers played a crucial role in the creative process of his album, voting on beats, critiquing lyrics, and even helping determine which songs made the final cut. The event also featured an all-star lineup of guest appearances, with artists like Ty Dolla $ign, Queen Naija, Kevin Gates, Rich the Kid, and Shaboozey dropping in to collaborate. Popular Twitch personalities Kai Cenat, Adin Ross, and Deshae Frost also joined the action.
Adding even more unpredictability, DDG took on a Fear Factor-style challenge involving “wild animals” after hitting 35,000 subscribers. By the time the stream wrapped on Monday (March 31), DDG had not only delivered an album, but also grew his following organically.
