Denzel Washington’s ‘Othello’ Shut Out 2025 Tony Nominations

Despite a triumphant debut, Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal’s Othello revival was shut out of the 2025 Tony Award nominations. On Thursday (May 1), the 26 competitive categories for the American Theatre Wing’s 78th Annual Antoinette Perry Tony Awards® were announced today by Tony Award winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce, with not one being attributed to any talent associated with the aforementioned Broadway play.

According to Variety, Othello recouped its entire investment after nine weeks on Broadway, earning $9 million, and making it the highest-grossing play revival in history. It was also one of this season’s most expensive seats, with tickets selling for over $900.

Othello opened at the Barrymore Theatre on March 23 and has sold out every performance. Attendees of the star-studded spring event included Gayle King, Samuel L. Jackson, Dr. Jill Biden and Former U.S. President Joe Biden, Ariana DeBose, Nia Long, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, and more.

“I’ve been blessed beyond measure for a long time,” Washington explained to Entertainment Tonight when asked about the high-priced tickets and successful sales of Othello.

“I’m not bragging, but I’ve been a part of sold-out shows before. God has blessed me with a great ability, and I’m humbled by the reaction and the response that we’re getting, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to… use my celebrity to help others. That’s what it’s about.”

The 2025 Tony Awards will return to the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City next month and will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo.
