Meet Djenga – you’ll know him as Andrew Chaplin of Locnville – but he’s breaking out his solo pseudonym with an infectiously polished debut EP, Sunsets in Valencia. Despite this being his debut release, Djenga has been lurking on the periphery for a while, cropping up on a Locnville track here and there, but this EP serves as something fresh and different for Chaplin.
Created between Berlin, Germany and Belgrade, Serbia, Sunsets in Valencia is an ode to just that – the searing Spanish sunsets of the coastal city – but it’s also a fresh EDM snippet of Djenga’s knife-sharp production.
Featuring the vocal additions of Venior (from Finland), Audae (from France), and South Africa’s own Anna Wolf, he pairs his slick production, sweeping electronic soundscapes and infectious beats with their lilting vocal variances.
“Me and You” features Anna Wolf’s dulcet tones against hollow, liquid synth and rich, punchy rhythm. “Groove on My Heart” brings some vaguely island flavours into the mix with a driving bass drop and percussive electronics – while “Shadow & Light” slips between Venoir’s pitching vocalism and Audae’s compelling French verses while delivering a scintillating bowl of sound pivoted off a searing, muted beat – and Djenga flexes his production prowess with effortless style.
