Can former friends reconcile if deportation is thrown on the table by one of the parties? Time will tell in the case of Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who have been at odds over the last few months after Musk left his position in the Oval Office.
President Trump recently threatened to get the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on the X (formerly Twitter) owner to look into government payments made to his multiple companies. He admitted to reporters that he is willing to look into deporting Musk if need be, all after the Tesla leader continued to criticize him and his leadership.
On Tuesday (July 1), the president responded, “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look,” when a reporter asked if he would deport Musk.
“Elon may get more subsidies than any human being in history, by far,” the 79-year-old politician wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday (July 1). “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. […] No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
Trump got on the defensive, or offensive rather, after Musk criticized him for his sweeping spending bill. “The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!” Musk wrote on X this past weekend. “Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.”
Musk said that the lawmakers who backed the bill, despite previously supporting a cut in spending, should “hang their heads in shame.” He continued by saying his efforts are focused on the long-term. “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.” Just last month, he accused the convicted felon of being part of Jeffrey Epstein’s infamous files. Needless to say, this is quite the shift for two men who worked closely just a few months ago.
