Dr. Dre Is Making A Film About Marvin Gaye

When it comes to Marvin Gaye, many in Hollywood have tried to bring the talented but troubled singer’s life to the big screen, and many have failed.

Except for Dr. Dre.

Variety reports Dre is working to get a Marvin Gaye film off the ground. The music mogul and entrepreneur is no stranger to moviemaking, as he’s starred in and produced Training Day, The Wash, and produced the Academy Award-nominated Straight Outta Compton.

Director F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, the late James Gandolfini, Scott Rudin, Jesse L. Martin and Lenny Kravitz have all tried to turn Gaye’s story into a biopic, but until now none have made it past the Gaye family.

This is the first project the estate has signed off on since Jamie Foxx was given the rights for a limited series in 2016. Unfortunately, that project has seen no progress since it’s inception.

Dre, on the other hand, is already making strides. On top of gaining the authorization from Gaye’s family, the Beats by Dre owner has also secured the rights to the late singer’s music from Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Gaye helped shape Motown’s sound for two decades before being fatally shot following a family dispute in 1984. He was 44.
