It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Espacio Dios. Off the back of his 2022 single “Pelo”, today sees him kicking off 2023 with the release of his latest single, “Collapse All Rules”.
Lifted off an upcoming album, which is due to see the light sometime later this year, it’s a self-professed holistic submission to the significant other. Translation, it’s a sweetly weighted love song. An extended and varied dotage on the woman of his affections.
Pivoted off a rhythm-rooted backbone, it’s in this stuttered melody that this track’s strength really lies. Clattering and percussive, Dios lays the foundation of his crooning, liquid R&B vocals. It was penned in a moment of sonic experimentation for Dios – who submitted to the vulnerability of the songwriting process and saw just what came of it.
The result is an even-tempered R&B love song that’s a little off kilter, and it signals that beneath those well-trodden R&B tropes lies an edge to Dios that keeps his sound as fresh-faced as it is familiar.
