As is the case with everything Kendrick Lamar does, especially throughout his beef with Drake, his Apple Music Super Bowl LIX halftime show included a few easter eggs and caused fans to theorize about other aspects of the show that may not have actually been so purposeful. Some believe that the 37-year-old rapper’s lowercase “a” chain was another diss toward his foe, causing yet another trip down a rabbit hole on social media.
During K. Dot’s set, he answered the big question leading into the show by performing his smash hit diss song “Not Like Us,” which includes the line: “Trying to strike a chord and it’s probably A Minor.” The bar played on his allegations of the 6 God being a pedophile and has become one of the most-chanted parts of the song.
Fans noticed that Lamar was wearing an iced-out chain with a lowercase “a” as the pendant, and believed that it was a play on the “A Minor” line. Several users shared pictures and clips hinting at that idea, but there is a meaning that is much less venomous.
PgLang, Kendrick Lamar’s American independent multidisciplinary creative communications company that he founded alongside Dave Free, has a logo with two children reaching up toward a lowercase “a.” As Lamar is now a full-fledged signee to that label, leaving TDE after his 2022 album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, the chain was seemingly nothing more than promotion of his venture. This idea was furthered by multiple backup dancers running around Caesar’s Superdome field holding flags with the PgLang logo during his performance.
Nonetheless, fans still had fun theorizing that it had a deeper meaning or calling him out for focusing his performance on Drake. “If we’re being honest it seemed like Kendrick Lamar’s whole superbowl performance was based around Drake,” one fan wrote. “The songs, the shade, him bringing out Serena Williams, down to the ‘A’ chain around his neck standing for “Aubrey”. That proves who the GOAT really is.”
“Thought kendrick’s chain was an amazon ad but it’s literally an A minor,” another fan wrote. “Kendrick Lamar was out here wearing an a minor chain lmaooo DIABOLICAL,” another account said. “Ya’ll catch the lowercase ‘a’ chain?!? The pettiness from Kendrick Lamar is unmatched,” another user said. While the intent may not have been properly interpreted by fans, it gave them another moment to enjoy in what was a major achievement for Hip-Hop; Lamar was the first rapper to headline the Super Bowl on his own, just one week after winning five Grammys for a diss song.
