A heated exchange between Love & Hip-Hop: Miami stars Flo and Amara La Negra has ignited a debate about colorism on social media—with many drawing parallels to Erica Mena’s controversial firing from Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta in 2023.
In a viral clip from a recent episode, Flo and Amara can be seen engaging in a tense argument over colorist remarks. During the confrontation, Amara challenged Flo for promoting skin-bleaching products in her skincare line to Black women, leading Flo to respond in a way that wasn’t expected.
“You ugly as f**k. No wonder your baby daddy called you a Black a** bi**h,” Flo shouted at the Afro-Latina singer. “I’m light-skinned. This bi**h is mad… That’s how Black bi**hes hate on light-skinned girls!” With an entire table of melanated women taken back by the remark, Amara responded, “You should really stop telling Black women to stop loving themselves. How do you come to an event with a bunch of Black beautiful women to promote women’s positivity, but you’re on social media telling people to bleach their skin?”
Since the clip has caused a firestorm online, Flo has issued an apology through her Instagram page.
“I want to take this opportunity to address the recent scene that aired and the conversations it has sparked,” she began. “I take full accountability for the words I said during that moment, and I deeply regret how they may have come across. I never intended to hurt or diminish anyone, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who felt offended or disrespected by my words.”
Flo then further explained what “fully took place” during taping. “The way it was presented lacked important context, but that doesn’t change the fact that my words had an impact, and for that, I am truly sorry.” She added, “As a proud Black woman with deep ties to my Haitian heritage, I stand firmly against colorism. The product I sell is [not] a bleaching cream; it is designed to even skin tone and support healthy, glowing skin. I celebrate Black beauty in all its forms and am committed to empowering women of every shade.”
The reality star then admitted that she’s used the situation as a “learning moment,” as it has reminded her of the “power of words.” Moving forward, Flo has vowed to be more “intentional” with her actions and wants to focus on “unity, love and positivity.” Read her apology below.
Social media reacted with mixed commentary about the sensitive topic of colorism. One user dismissed the controversy on Instagram, commenting, “She needs to grow up… that storyline is played out! Dark-skinned girls hate on light-skinned girls—like, are we in middle school? Women hate on women, period!”
Another user defended Amara, stating, “Let’s be clear, Amara is a lot of things, but she is gorgeous. She looks way better than Flo. And this is the second person to come at Amara and not be canceled. Where is the outrage y’all had for Erica Mena?”
Mena, herself, entered the comment section under The Neighborhood Talk’s repost of the scene, voicing her frustration over what she perceives as a double standard. Mena was fired from Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta after using a racial slur against fellow cast member Spice, a moment that drew widespread backlash for her.
“I went to hell when it came to my child based on the individual’s looks, not skin color,” she commented. “As any mother would have in my position. I was filming for months and months after it happened UNTIL the world was selectively outraged. I was only fired so the network could save face. But yet this is okay, and she’s probably still filming now. Won’t have her job taken from her. This is exactly why humans can NEVER ‘cancel’ ME. The man upstairs knows what’s what.”
Some fans agreed that the consequences for some cast members’ behavior has been different from others, and others argued that Mena’s past remarks were indefensible.
