France head coach Didier Deschamps described his side’s World Cup triumph as “the supreme coronation” as victory buried the memory of their defeat in the European Championship final two years ago.
Six of the players who started in France’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Portugal on home turf in 2016 featured in Deschamps’ line-up in Moscow on Sunday, where Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe all found the net in a 4-2 victory over Croatia.
Deschamps praised his players’ mental strength and work ethic after becoming only the second France side in history to lift the World Cup, and felt his team had put two years of hurt behind them.
“There is pride when you reach your objectives,” he told TF1. “We were really hurt when we lost in the Euro final two years ago.
“It was important for us to kill this moment. The players have won the games and it was a lot of work.
“Some of the players are champions at 19. It wasn’t a great performance from us, but we demonstrated some great mental qualities and we scored four times.
“It’s so beautiful, it’s magnificent.”
Only Mario Zagallo of Brazil and Franz Beckenbauer of Germany had won the World Cup as players and coaches before Deschamps, but he played down comparisons with those greats of the game.
“I’m not as good as them. At least on the pitch,” he said. “I don’t think about myself.
“It’s well deserved and I’m happy for my boys. We’ve come from afar and it wasn’t always easy.
“But we worked hard and the players are on top of the world.”
He dedicated the victory to the people of France, saying: “We love them and we’re proud to be French.
“Let’s meet tomorrow and ‘Vive la Republique’.”
