Frank Ocean‘s directorial debut has named its star. According to an exclusive report from Variety, the musician’s film will be led by British actor David Jonsson. Jonsson most recently starred in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Romulus, released in 2024. Previously, he starred in Rye Lane for Searchlight Pictures, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023 and went on to be nominated for Outstanding British Film at the BAFTA Film Awards.

Per Variety, the 31-year-old has also been named to star in Wasteman alongside Tom Blyth, Stephen King’s The Long Walk, and Colman Domingo’s directorial debut Scandalous with Sydney Sweeney.

The film with Frank Ocean has recently begun production in Mexico City, although details including a title, additional cast, and plot have been kept secret.

Rumors of the film first began in 2022, with reports of an alleged feature film opportunity with A24, the independent film and TV company for the acclaimed film Moonlight (which Ocean wrote the foreword for) as well as the Emmy Award-winning HBO series Euphoria. At the time, the “Pink Matter” performer was rumored to have been looking at locations in New Mexico for filming and the project was believed to be tentatively titled Philly.

On the music side, the 37-year-old dropped a snippet of a mysterious song in November 2023. The still unreleased track comes after 2020’s “Dear April” and “Cayendo.” He also shared an untitled nine-minute song in his Christmas special on his Apple Music 1 Blonded Radio show in December 2021, which also has not been officially released.

As far as an album, the singer has not dropped since 2016’s Blonde which featured appearances and contributions from Pharrell Williams, Jon Brion, Buddy Ross, James Blake, Beyoncé, André 3000, and more.
