Gavin Adcock Slams Beyoncé ‘Cowboy Carter’ During Rant At Recent Show

Beyoncé, when promoting her now-GRAMMY award-winning country album, Cowboy Carter, was vocal about previously not feeling welcome in the genre. Country singer Gavin Adcock proved that to still be true by slamming the March 2024 LP, which is charting ahead of his forthcoming effort, Own Worst Enemy, during a rant at his recent concert.

The 26-year-old singer spoke to a live audience about the fact that Enemy is No. 4 on Apple Music’s country albums chart, which is notable given the fact that the full album does not come out until Aug. 15; the 24-track LP is already in the top five of the chart off of the strength of eight singles that have been released. Meanwhile, Cowboy Carter sits at No. 3 over a year after coming out.

“You can tell her we’re coming for her f**kin’ a**,” Adcock told the rambunctious crowd. “That sh*t ain’t country music and it ain’t ever been country music, and it ain’t gonna be country music,” he said while raising a bottle of alcohol and pointing to his attendees. And if there was any question about him possibly regretting calling out one of the biggest stars in music, his eventual Instagram video discussing his rant proved that he stood by everything he said.

“I’m gonna go ahead and clear this up,” he began, recalling that his mother played a lot of Queen Bey’s music when he was growing up, he was familiar with her catalog, and that he even enjoyed her Super Bowl performances.

“But I really don’t believe that her album should be labeled as country music. It doesn’t sound country, it doesn’t feel country, and I just don’t think that people that have dedicated their whole lives to this genre and this lifestyle should have to compete or watch that album just stay at the top, just because she’s Beyoncé.” Coincidentally, the mother of three herself declined labeling the album a country album, instead simply saying that it was a “Beyoncé album” while promoting it.

Adcock may have the chance to usurp her No. 3 spot when Own Worst Enemy comes out in a little over a month, but it will be a tall task given her stature and accolades for the album. Not only did the 43-year-old singer win overall Album Of The Year at this year’s GRAMMYs, but she also won Best Country Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “II Most Wanted” featuring Miley Cyrus. Many people believe that the GRAMMYs introduced the new Best Traditional Country album category so that artists more “true” to the genre can get recognized in the future, if any other non-Country artists decide to venture into the sound.
