Over the weekend, the highly anticipated boxing match between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. ended in a controversial draw. The people were upset, but none more than Davis, who is calling for a rematch to happen as soon as possible.
“And say no more. I’m pushing for the rematch,” “Tank” tweeted on Monday morning (March 3). “The rematch can be soon too..like end of may.” Roach seemed frustrated by the way Davis framed the possibility of the rematch, given the terms of their initial boxing contract, so he quoted him and got a bit combative.
“F**k you mean pushing ni**a my contract already signed and set for the immediate rematch cuz,” he wrote. “You put that in there just incase you lost. Only reason we don’t fight is cuz u scared.” He wasn’t shying away from how he felt about Davis either, writing, “I was never worried bout that and truth be told you hit like a bi**h! that ni**a was jumpin up and down cuz I was f**king u up f**k u talkin bout.”
Gervonta Davis didn’t back down; in fact, his subsequent tweets sounded like he believed that Lamont Roach Jr. was ducking him. “This guy is faking,” he wrote with multiple laughing emojis before taking accountability for the draw. “But this what happen..and I can only blame myself!!!..but say no more!!”
The Saturday evening (March 1) boxing match was especially controversial because, at one point, Davis took a knee during the fight after a hard hit by Roach Jr. The referees did not rule it as a knockdown, though many believed it should have been marked down as such. WBA rules also outline that if a fighter voluntarily takes a knee, the referee is supposed to start counting to 10.
Roach Jr. seems confident that the WBA officials will recognize the error and retroactively reward him the win. “Word round the block yall fav fight finna be 30-1 not 30-0-1…,” he wrote with the hands-over-eyes emoji. “2X x 2 Division champ.” As for their rematch, the end of May is just over two months away which puts a lot of pressure on the WBA to handle logistics and promote the fight. Time will tell if the rematch comes to fruition then, or at all.
