Waking up to fraud allegations levelled against a Gospel giant is not something one would anticipate. Dr. Tumi has been trending since the news of his arrest along with his wife was made public knowledge, but despite what many are saying about him, he remains reticent.

The medical doctor by profession and Gospel singer by fame has “broken his silence” following the uproar on social media. He reveals that his legal team is advising him to not utter a word about the matter as it is an ongoing investigation.

Taking to Twitter during the whole debacle, he said, “Good day fam. Hope you all are well. We also are good. As per legal advice, kindly note that we won’t be commenting on the current media reports, as the matter is before the courts. Thank you for your understanding and support. Love to you all and wishing you a great day. In a media statement, Hawks spokesperson Capt Ndivhuwo Mulamu confirmed that indeed the couple did get arrested saying they received R760 000 from the R1.5 million of funds.

“The couple allegedly benefited approximately R760,000 from the funds. They handed themselves in at the Johannesburg office escorted by their attorney and were subsequently charged for fraud.”

Dr. Tumi and his wife handed themselves in at the Hawks offices, in the presence of their lawyers on Tuesday. They were then released on R3000 bail. According to the Hawks, the couple along with the other two suspects allegedly submitted altered grant application documents to the National Lotteries Board for approval of funds on projects back in 2018.

Gospel Musician Dr Tumi and his wife were released on R3000 bail each by the Commercial Crimes court sitting in Palm Ridge on Tuesday.

The couple Dr Tumi, real name Tumisang Makweya and Kgaogelo Makweya handed themselves on Tuesday to the Hawks and were arrested and charged with fraud amounting to R1.5 million. Learn more
