The cast and creators of Opus welcomed an excited audience to the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Calif. on Wednesday night (Feb. 19) to immerse themselves in the weird thriller. The film, which initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, is directed and written by Mark Anthony Green and stars Ayo Edibiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, and more. It also features original music from The-Dream and Nile Rodgers.

Edibiri leads as a journalist who is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star (John Malkovich), who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago.

“You know Mark Anthony who directed the film was a journalist at GQ for a long time, so we would sit down and have conversations,” she explained to VIBE of drawing inspiration for the role, continuing to detail how she had conversations with her friends who work as longtime journalists. “I reread a lot of celebrity profiles, that’s an art form in itself. I really love the celebrity profiles of the 1990s and early 2000s before celebrities were as accessible as they are now.”

In the film, once Edibiri’s character reaches her destination, she is surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists,  finding herself in the middle of his twisted plan.

Opus is a film about tribalism and if tribalism passed entertainment,” explained Green. “The great thing about being an artist is you don’t have to have the answers, you just got to make something provocative enough for people to ask good questions… I’ll keep making weird movies.”

Opus is set to be released in theaters nationwide on March 14. Take a look at the trailer for Opus above and check out pics from the Los Angeles premiere below.
