On Friday night (Jan. 24), VIBE made its official debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival as a media partner with a star-studded event. Celebrating the latest digital cover featuring Questlove, the party recognized his work across music and film, and honored his documentary SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), which premiered at the festival. Presented in collaboration with the Onyx Collective, the Philadelphia native DJ’d the entire event, spinning a blend of Hip-Hop, R&B, house, funk, and more.

Guests included Bun B, Mack Wilds, DJ D-Nice, Jennifer Freeman, Lenny S, Mekai Curtis,  Jimmy Akingbola, Johnny Oleksinski, Tan France, Khleo Thomas, Kalan Allen, Etienne Maurice, Sly Stone’s daughter Novena Caramel Sly, and additional family members.

The invite-only event featured an open bar, nostalgic Polaroid moments, and a custom take-home vinyl recording station.  As the party reached an energetic climax, Questlove hopped on the mic to share kind remarks for all in attendance.

SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)  debuts on Hulu on Feb. 13, 2025. See more pics from the VIBE and Onyx Collelctive cover party below.
