Jussie Smollett proposed to boyfriend Jabari Redd this weekend, bringing the good news to his followers via social media.
The Empire alum, 43, shared several images of himself down on one knee proposing to Redd, who appears to laugh and cover his face in shock. “I’ll be spending my birthday with my Fiancé… He said YES,” Smollett captioned the carousel of Instagram photos.
Congratulations came in from friends and family of the couple, including Jussie’s siblings. Sister and fellow actor Jurnee Smollett commented, “Screaming with tears of joy! My whole heart loves both of you @jussiesmollett. Welcome to the family @jabariredd,” followed by two heart emojis. Sister Jazz Smollett added, “Yaaaass!!! Welcome to the family Jabari!!! Love y’all!! Sooooo happy for you both!”
Other well-wishers included Robert Glasper, Amber Riley, Durand Bernarr and Empire executive producer Lee Daniels.
While they’ve been private in their romance, they’ve also been posting each other on social media since 2022. The following year, they co-starred in The Lost Holiday, co-starring Vivica A. Fox and produced by Smollett, Tressa Azarel Smallwood, and Mona Scott-Young.
DETROIT, MICHIGAN – JUNE 07: (L-R) Jussie Smollett, Vivica A. Fox, and Jabari Redd speak on a panel during Black Owned Media Weekend at The Beacon Detroit on June 07, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan.
The engagement comes weeks after Smollett and the city of Chicago settled a $130,000 lawsuit tied to his infamous 2019 hate crime hoax, where the star was found guilty of filing a false police report involving two alleged “MAGA-supporting” assailants. However, “additional time is needed” to finalize the documentation, according to NBC.
