Kane Keid Explains Why He Will Not Sign To A Record Label

In an exclusive interview with The Citizen, the trailblazing musician shared his decision to release his music independently, shedding light on the philosophy that drives his artistry and his bold rejection of the traditional record label model.

“I mean, for the past few years, we’ve seen what record companies did to artists,” Kane Keid explained with conviction. “How artists walk away from label deals with either nothing or less than what they initially were meant to have.” These words resonate deeply in an industry where countless stories of exploitative contracts and unmet promises have tarnished the sheen of major record deals.

For Keid, the decision to go independent is more than just a practical choice; it’s a statement of artistic integrity. By collaborating with a distribution company, he has found a way to maintain control over his work while ensuring it reaches a global audience.

The shift to independent music production and distribution is part of a larger trend, fueled by advancements in technology and the rise of platforms that empower artists to bypass traditional gatekeepers. But for Keid, it’s not just about leveraging these tools; it’s about creating a sustainable model that prioritizes fairness and authenticity.

The young rapper has gained a passable fan base in SA hip-hop following his relatable raps. His art has transcended the borders of SA hip-hop after he was co-signed by the US rapper Benny The Butcher. “I didn’t come into the scene doing the latest trend. I came into the game rapping; rapping about real stuff that everybody can relate to, telling stories through words.” He said.
