Ye visited The Download podcast with Justin LaBoy where he opened up about his mental health journey. In the conversation, the musician formerly known as Kanye West dismissed a previous diagnosis for a new one, a process he says was encouraged by his wife Bianca Censori.
“My wife took me because she said, ‘Something about your personality doesn’t feel like it’s bipolar, I’ve seen bipolar before,’” explained the Chicago native, per E! News. “And come to find out, it’s really a case of autism that I have.”
He continued to detail how he believes the disorder impacts his behavior.
“You’re like, ‘Oh man, I’m gonna wear this [Donald] Trump hat ‘cause I just like Trump in general,” shared the 47-year-old. “And when people tell you to not do it…and that’s my problem, when fans tell me to do my album a certain way, I’ll do it the opposite way.”

When asked if he’s taking medication, the “Jesus Walks” rhymer confirmed he no longer takes his prescription for the now-dismissed bipolar disorder.
“I haven’t taken the medication since I found out it wasn’t bipolar, that it wasn’t the right diagnosis,” the rapper shared. “It’s finding stuff that doesn’t block the creativity, obviously that’s what I bring to the world. It’s worth the ramp up, as long as y’all get the creativity.”
In a 2018 interview, Ye opened up about not being “diagnosed” with a mental condition until “I was like 39 years old,” continuing to declare his bipolar disorder as “not a disability, it’s a superpower,” according to Billboard.
