Kordell Beckham has landed his scripted debut in KeyTV’s new series, Southern Fried Rice.
Created by award-winning screenwriter Nakia Stephens, the series centers around KoKo (Page Yang), a Gen-Z Asian American girl who was raised from birth by Southern Black parents and her struggles to “defend and redefine her identity after being accepted into a popular Historically Black College and University (HBCU).”
Deadline noted that Beckham plays Steve, “a carefree, artsy intellectual who marches to the beat of his own drum as a music major. In addition to his handsome face and unique style, he is spontaneous and sociable.”
Stephens spoke highly of the Love Island USA Season 6 winner. “Working with Kordell was truly a joy,” she shared with VIBE. “He’s a star in the making! He’s incredibly humble, personable, and professional! A natural talent who is so fun to work with. You can tell he’s serious about learning and perfecting the craft of acting.”
She added, “‘Southern Fried Rice’ is a love letter to HBCU culture and the beautiful chaos of self-discovery. Damn Write Originals is always intentional about creating authentic, character-driven stories that reflect the complexities of the human experience, so this series is no different.”
Southern Fried Rice is the fourth project between Damn Write Originals and KeyTV. Stephens described their partnership as a “powerful collaboration.” Previous series include Heaux & Tell and Nepotista.
Southern Fried Rice is executive produced by Keke Palmer, Sharon Palmer, and Lenoria Addison for KeyTV. The series was created, written, and produced by Stephens. It was co-produced by Shanay J. Campbell and directed by Shayla Racquel.
There’s no word on when the series is set to premiere.
