L-Tido Raises Alarm On Fake Alcohol In SA. Rapper and media personality L-Tido has sparked a serious conversation online after posting a striking video clip highlighting the alarming rise of fake alcohol circulating in South Africa.

In the clip, a branded Hennessy bottle is shown beside a large plastic bucket filled with a questionable brown liquid—allegedly the counterfeit version of the premium cognac.

Taking to social media with a mix of frustration and disbelief, L-Tido urged South Africans to reconsider their drinking habits. “Bafethu, let’s just quit alcohol… drinking is becoming an extreme sport,” he wrote. His caption referenced a growing concern in the country, claiming that “More than R20 billion of alcohol on South Africa’s shelves is fake alcohol.”

The video quickly gained traction as social media users reacted with a mix of humour, fear, and outrage. The chilling visual of bucket-brewed booze served as a wake-up call for many, especially given the health risks associated with consuming unregulated, bootlegged liquor.

South Africa’s fake alcohol market has ballooned in recent years, with syndicates allegedly manufacturing and distributing counterfeit spirits that are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing—until the consequences hit. Consumers have reported everything from severe hangovers and chemical burns to long-term liver damage after drinking suspected fakes.

L-Tido’s post didn’t just strike a chord because of the shocking imagery; it also highlighted a deeper cultural issue. Alcohol is a major part of South African nightlife and social life, but the risks are becoming harder to ignore. “This is the Hennessy we are drinking from a bucket,” he warned—a sobering metaphor for what many are unknowingly consuming in clubs, taverns, and even retail stores.

In the face of a billion-rand black market and the dangers it poses, L-Tido’s words might just be the push needed for a national reckoning.

As the rapper suggested, maybe it’s time to rethink our relationship with alcohol before the next sip comes with a side of poison.
