Larenz Tate and Nia Long are fueling fans’ demands for a Love Jones sequel as they reunite once again, but this time for a Walmart holiday campaign.
In the brief commercial, there are several references to the classic film. It opens as Dionne Farris’ “Hopeless” plays and Nina (Long) opens the door to a surprise package. It’s an early Christmas gift from her now-husband, Darius (Tate). He walked in on her as she opened the gift—a Victrola record player.
“You know I don’t like to wait,” he replied when she asked about the gift—which is a direct nod to the end of the film when she questions, “Why is everything so urgent with you?” To which he responds, “This here, right now, at this very moment, is all that matters to me. I love you. That’s urgent like a motherf**ker.”
Tate then delivers his iconic line: “Mind if I play something for you?,” and he throws on The Isley Brothers—a reference to the CD she was looking for and he later gifted to her in the film.
In the commercial, their daughter—following in her mother’s footsteps—snaps a photo of Nina and Darius dancing to the slow jam. The ad evokes the perfect amount of nostalgia, but still has fans holding out hope for the next installment in the Love Jones universe.
In October 2023, Tate spoke on a potential sequel to the romantic drama and explained to AL.com, “It would be hard for us to catch lightning in the bottle twice.” However, he and Long have been discussing what Love Jones 2 can look like.
Earlier this year, he even hinted that he was in talks to play someone’s onscreen husband. “I’ve been in these business meetings outchea in these Hollywood streets and it’s interesting ’cause often times, people in these rooms wanna know what I wanna do. I’m like ‘I gotta do something romantic.’ I wanna play somebody’s husband!,” Tate quipped.
It’d only be right for him to play Nina’s husband first. Check out the full Love Jones commercial above.
