There were some exceptional performances at last night’s Grammy awards, from quickly becoming pop-legend Harry Styles to Steve Lacy, Bad Bunny, Stevie Wonder and Mary J. Blige, but the performance of the night belonged to Lizzo.
With an all-black women gospel choir behind her, she brought the audience a soulful, self-affirming rendition of her hit single “Special”, and to say that it was surreal would be an understatement.
We’ve come to expect high-octance sass from Lizzo, but last night she swapped the funk for elegance. The performance began with an a capella take on “About Damn Time”, showing the intense beauty, and power, of her vocal abilities.
Moving swiftly into “Special”, things ended with a joyous chorus of song, proving that Lizzo is capable of a lot more than she lets on. It was a glorious moment, resplendent in gold gowns and intense showmanship.
