The purest and most captivating music often resides with underground, budding musicians—perhaps due to their novelty or whatever other reason; their contributions to weekly releases are just as significant, if not more so, than those of mainstream artists. For this week’s Best New Music, we spotlight M3lon’s ‘London Girl’ featuring Minz, from his newly released sophomore EP When Life Gives You Melons—a brilliant pun on his name and the popular saying “when life gives you lemons”.

M3lon’s offering is unique in that it typically delivers soothing music, regardless of the subject matter, with the added benefit of mainstream appeal. As evidenced by his choice of collaborators on the EP, M3lon seeks out similarly calming but distinct sounds from guest artists like KAESTYLE and Minz, resulting in an amalgamation of musical brilliance. On ‘London Girl,‘ released a day before the EP, M3lon explores romance while simultaneously being consumed by lust. “You make me move like a gangster, saw that a*s on Tinder, said let me grab your Insta,” he glides smoothly, maintaining a cadence that fits perfectly with the mid-tempo production by Timmy.

But it doesn’t end there, the percussion is delayed, setting up the listener for the guest verse. Minz stays within the lustful theme of the track as he professes his desires to the lady while hungover: “Olohun seh, I getti hangover, I wan dey bend, I wan dey bend your back aghahowa.” Together, they create a memorable record, with a delivery that complements each verse rather than overshadowing it.
