Majozi and Mthandazo Gatya deliver a synth-laden, emotionally-fuelled letter of devotion in their new collaborative single “Mi Amor” and, honestly, it was only a matter of time before these two joined forces. What with Majozi’s crooning indie-folk having permeated the better part of the last decade, and Mthandazo’s unique timbre hooking the attention of John Legend, who he performed with late last year.
“Mi Amor”, inspired by Majozi’s own experience in meeting his wife for the first time, warms up the last weeks of winter with a delightfully summery virtuosity. Beatenberg-esque hollow percussive rhythm and atmospheric synth bolster Majozi’s lovelorn lyricism for the light-footed pop-infused confession of adoration.
Mthandazo slides in for a gorgeous contrast of isiZulu vocals, contributing an effortlessly organic, almost rousing African inflection which reminds me inadvertently of Baaba Maal’s collaboration with Mumford and Sons circa 2016. Majozi flexes his unerring indie parameters, while Mthandazo brings his own fresh-faced authenticity to the table for a beautiful release.
