Mariah Carey has proven she’s a woman of many talents, and although she cemented her name in pop and R&B, her fans have always been curious about her rock & roll chops. The singer recently fed into those desires and provided an update about her atl-rock album titled Someone’s Ugly Daughter, a project she worked on with her band in 1995 while also recording Daydream.
“I mean, I really want to [release it], but I want to do videos, and I have just so many ideas for that,” she told Associated Press on Thursday (April 10).
She also provided an honest and realistic timeline for when fans could expect to hear some of the creations, confirming it may not be ready this year — although she may provide some teasers. “I don’t think I’ll be able to pull it together by the summer (before the Rock Hall ceremony) but maybe, maybe I’ll release a few songs from it,” the 6x Grammy winner stated.
Carey revealed the rock album exists in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The LP wound up being releasing under the pseudonym Chick with her friend Clarissa Dane on lead vocals. However, she later told Rolling Stone Music Now that the original version featuring her voice is in her possession.
“I think this unearthed version will become something that, yes, we should hear,” she said at the time. “But also, I’m working on a version of something where there’ll be another artist working on this with me as well… Possibly something built around the album. I’m just full of surprises.”
It’s an exciting time in the legendary singer’s career as she celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Emancipation of Mimi. Released in 2005, the magnum opus project housed a handful of career-defining hits like “We Belong Together” and “Shake It Off.” It boasted guest appearances from Jermaine Dupri, the late Fatman Scoop, Snoop Dogg, Twista, Nelly, and more.
To celebrate, the Butterfly creator revealed she will be releasing an extra special 20th anniversary of the project.
“Happy Mimi Anniversary!! I’m excited to celebrate this one with you,” she wrote on Instagram. “While working on #Mimi20, I got to relive all the memories from this pivotal moment in my personal and professional life. This album has some of my biggest hits to date, as well as some personal favorites that are very special to me. Let me know what your favorite Mimi lyric is and stay tuned for more surprises yet to come! Love, MC.”
