According to Mike Epps, Last Friday is finally happening.
“[Ice Cube] called me the other day and said we just finished the deal,” Epps revealed on The Breakfast Club on Tuesday (Mar. 4). “So, we doin’ the last ‘Friday’ man.”
The comedian, who co-starred in Next Friday and Friday After Next, went on to praise Cube for putting people on. “Shoutout to Cube, man. That’s another brother that’s put so many brothers on, man. Man, this dude put so many— and don’t really get the props for it. Put me, Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac, I mean name ’em,” Epps continued.
After Epps raved about his work on The Upshaws and also putting others on, he admitted that he hasn’t read the script for Last Friday.
“But I’m pretty sure it’s good,” he quipped. Epps then shared plans for him and Cube to “bring in the new comics,” specifically namedropping D.C. Young Fly as well as the return of the “OGs.” There’s no confirmation on whether or not Tucker will reprise his role, but Epps believes “we need to get [him].”
Epps noted, “People still love Chris Tucker. He’s still Smokey. He laid it down,” and then addressed the Rush Hour star directly. “Chris, if you’re listening, we need you baby boy. Come on back,” the Jumping The Broom actor expressed. Tucker, though, exited the franchise due to religious beliefs.
There’s currently no timeline on when production will start, but “the deal is done.”
Rumors about Last Friday have been floating around over the past few years. Last January, Katt Williams expressed that there was an “urgency” to get the film made following the death of John Witherspoon in 2019.
“We lost some great people before [Friday 4] could come out, regardless. So yes, there desperately needs to be one. But we miss John Witherspoon in a way that can’t really be quantified,” he explained.
During his notorious Club Shay Shay interview, Williams confirmed that he would reprise his role as Money Mike and Cube even asked him to write it: “I was supposed to have been writing it. This is what these guys are mad about.”
Yet, Epps’ statement is the first update we’ve gotten since.
