Muni Long‘s relationship status has been a topic of interest among her fanbase, especially after her marriage with her partner of 9 years, Raysean Hairston, seemingly came to an end last summer. However, the 8x Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter clarified her past comments on the matter and explained how “public perception” may not always align with her intended message.

During an interview with REVOLT at 2025 ESSENCE Fest, she was asked about the break-up and replied, “One thing I find interesting in this day and age is how… I never said that. The truth doesn’t matter anymore. Public perception is everything and once a narrative is decided upon, it’s really like [shrugs].”

The “Hrs & Hrs” artist cleared up what she actually meant by her previous August 2024 statement about her marriage, adding, “What I said was, ‘I can’t wake up next to somebody every day that’s always in a bad mood, and I’ma have to move on.’ I’m paraphrasing, but the gist of it is, I only want to be around empowering, uplifting, positive, motivating, in-alignment people, places, and things. And if you’re not that, I feel like either I’m gonna walk away or you’re gonna fizzle out of the equation, because I just decided no more.”

She explained how choosing peace is important for her for several reasons, as her stress levels affect both her physical condition and mental health. “You’re not gonna keep stressing me out. Not only because I have a physical reason why, because it affects me. It affects my health,” she said, alluding to her Lupus diagnosis. She doubled down once again and concluded by saying she’s more focused on the positivity in her life. “But just mentally I want to have fun. I want to enjoy these blessings. I have a beautiful baby boy. I never said that guys. I don’t know where y’all got that from.”

In August 2024, Muni Long did an interview on Real 92.3’s The Cruz Show, where she made her initial comments that led fans to believe she and Hairston were no longer together. When speaking about what inspired her latest hit “Ruined Me,” she referenced her real-live experiences and marriage.

“I always pull from real experiences because I’m writing from my unique perspective. I can only talk about what I know. But this is the first time I’m putting my real life in it,” she said at the time. “It’s no secret… I’ve been married for nine years… it just didn’t work out, you know?”

Aside from making headlines for her love life, Muni Long has been busy blessing her fans with her pen, vocals, and stage presence. She performed a tribute for Mariah Carey alongside Tori Kelly at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards back in March, and is heading out on the road as an opener on Brandy and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine Tour. Most recently she delivered a stellar set at ESSENCE Fest.
