Nelly and Ashanti are well-versed in classic records, especially when it comes to each other’s respective discographies. So, during the couple’s press run for their Peacock reality series, Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together, Nelly confessed which of Ashanti’s hits are his all-time favorites.
In a fun ranking for Cocoa Butter, Nelly first had to choose between “Foolish” and “Baby.” The latter became the victor. He then had his wife in a fit of laughter when asking which music video starred Larenz Tate. (The answer is “Rain On Me.”)
“Baby” remained his top choice, even when having to decide between “Happy” and “Rock Wit U.” When it came to “Rain On Me,” he didn’t select it because of what it represented for their relationship back then. “‘Rain on Me’ was at a different time in our relationship,” he explanied. “We gon’ slide ‘Rain on Me’ along like that and stick with ‘Baby.’”
The St. Louis native found himself torn between “Always On Time” and “Mesmerize,” both of which feature Ashanti’s longtime friend and collaborator, Ja Rule. “See all of these are great records,” Nelly stated. “Yeah, some of them are with my brother Ja [Rule], ‘Baby’ is just my wife. I’m gonna ride with ‘Baby.’”
Overall, “Baby” was named Nelly’s favorite Ashanti song. “I’m a Scorpio man, so I stick to what I know and love and that’s ‘Baby,’” he quipped. “I love ‘Baby.’ That’s one of my favorite Ashanti records.”
“Baby” was the third single from Ashanti’s 2002 eponymous debut album. The catchy tune, which samples Scarface’s “Mary Jane,” peaked No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.
